In-game description

Huge bludgeon with three stars at the striking end. Though primarily a striking weapon, the stars' spikes cause blood loss.

A blood-stained star is an ill omen, a fact not lost upon those against whom this weapon is brought to bear. Landing attacks slightly restores HP.

Before you go

  • Reach Altus Plateau.
  1. Reach Altus Plateau using the Dectus Medallion halves from Fort Haight and Fort Faroth, or defeat Magma Wyrm Makar at Ruin-Strewn Precipice.
  2. Make your way to the northern plateau, above the forest and Minor Erdtree and below the windmill villages. Activate Road of Iniquity Side Path beneath the large broken bridge.
  3. Follow the road west from the grace and find the carriage pulled by two trolls, southwest of the bridge. Strike one troll to halt the caravan and give yourself room away from its escort.
  4. Climb onto the rear platform and open the chest for Great Stars. The soldiers and trolls do not drop this copy; it is a fixed chest reward.

Altus Plateau

Starting Site of Grace: Road of Iniquity Side Path

Before you go

  • Advance Varre's quest at Rose Church until he gives you Festering Bloody Fingers.
  • Keep a Festering Bloody Finger available to use Magnus's sign.
  3. At Rose Church in Liurnia, speak to Varré after obtaining a Great Rune and meeting the Two Fingers. Choose the dialogue questioning the Fingers and receive Festering Bloody Fingers.
  4. Return to northern Altus and find Writheblood Ruins east of the hanging bridge toward Mt. Gelmir. Search the northeastern ruined building for Magnus the Beast Claw's red invasion sign.
  5. Use the sign while carrying a Festering Bloody Finger. Each attempt spends one, and the encounter works without online invasions.
  6. Defeat Magnus for the second Great Stars. The Sanguine Noble in the separate cellar guards Bloody Helice and is not the opponent for this hammer.

Notes

  • With Standard affinity, physical damage scales most strongly with Strength, with weaker Dexterity scaling.
  • Upgrade it with Smithing Stones. Its maximum upgrade is +25.
  • Can use compatible Ashes of War. Your choice of skill and the whetblades you've found determine which affinities you can apply.
  • Grease or a weapon enchantment can be applied while using an affinity that allows weapon buffs.
  • Its normal weapon hits build up blood loss. The effect only triggers against enemies that are vulnerable to it.
  • Each connected hit restores 1% of your maximum HP, including a hit an enemy blocks. The amount depends on maximum HP, not the damage dealt, and a kill is unnecessary.
  • A swing that connects with several enemies heals for each target. Compatible skills with repeated hits, such as Wild Strikes or Prelate's Charge, can trigger several small heals rather than one heal for the entire animation.
  • Its ordinary damage is Strike, despite the spikes, and Standard affinity has 55 Blood Loss buildup. Arcane only strengthens eligible bleed after you choose an affinity that actually adds Arcane scaling.
  • Bloodflame Blade can be applied on a compatible Physical affinity, adding its delayed bleed alongside the weapon's own buildup. Blood or Cold affinity supplies a different permanent status option but removes ordinary grease and spell-buff compatibility.
  • The carriage and Magnus provide two copies in one Journey. Landing both weapons during a paired attack can restore 2% HP; missing with one does not grant its heal.
  • Magnus is also the offline invasion option for Varré's quest. Three visits can advance that quest without defeating him, but the weapon reward requires winning the invasion.
  • Starts with Endure, which can be replaced. Its healing is useful during an exchange, but a 1% return does not make a heavy enemy hit safe to ignore.
