Before you go

From Outer Wall Phantom Tree, follow the wide stairs northeast toward the next golden sapling. A Valiant Gargoyle drops onto this approach.
Defeat the gargoyle to receive Gargoyle's Great Axe. The other gargoyles around Leyndell and in Siofra Aqueduct have different rewards.
The enemy lands on the broad stairs between the outer-wall saplings. Its defeat directly awards the axe; the chest in the camp south of the grace contains Giant-Crusher instead.

With Standard affinity, physical damage scales most strongly with Strength, with weaker Dexterity scaling.
Upgrade it with Smithing Stones. Its maximum upgrade is +25.
Can use compatible Ashes of War. Your choice of skill and the whetblades you've found determine which affinities you can apply.
Grease or a weapon enchantment can be applied while using an affinity that allows weapon buffs.
Requires 24 Strength and 8 Dexterity and weighs 8.5. Two-handing meets its Strength requirement at 16; no Faith investment is needed for Standard.
Heavy reaches S Strength scaling at maximum reinforcement. That letter alone does not make it the hardest-hitting greataxe: its modest base Physical attack matters too.
Its small head gives it very short reach, with low weight as the tradeoff. Move close enough before starting a slow heavy attack.
Starts with War Cry for 16 FP. The 40-second weapon buff improves Physical attack power and changes heavy attacks into charging attacks.
War Cry shares the weapon-buff slot with grease and weapon enchantments. Roar Medallion helps its altered attacks, and Axe Talisman helps fully charged heavies.
It has no innate Holy damage or bleed. Gargoyle's Black Axe is a different, fixed-affinity weapon from the Forbidden Lands.
