In-game description
Large katana with a prominent tempering pattern on its black blade, unique to warriors of the Land of Reeds. The most finely honed of its ilk.
Designed for aggression, this armament requires the wielder to throw their entire body into swinging it. The slashing attacks of its honed edge incite blood loss.

Where to find
Gravesite Plain
Starting Site of Grace: Greatbridge, North
Before you go
- To enter the Realm of Shadow, defeat Starscourge Radahn and Mohg, Lord of Blood, then touch the withered arm in Mohg's arena at Mohgwyn Palace.
- Access the Realm of Shadow.
- From Three-Path Cross in northern Gravesite Plain, ride north toward the lake and Abandoned Ailing Village. Greatbridge, North grace is on the eastern side of the lake, west of Ellac Greatbridge.
- From Greatbridge, North, enter the shallow lake to the west and look for the sleeping Ghostflame Dragon. The village on the hill above is a separate destination.
- Loot the corpse beside the dragon to collect Great Katana. Move away promptly if the dragon wakes; defeating it is unnecessary for this fixed pickup.
Notes
- With Standard affinity, physical damage scales most strongly with Dexterity, with weaker Strength scaling.
- Upgrade it with Smithing Stones. Its maximum upgrade is +25.
- Can use compatible Ashes of War. Your choice of skill and the whetblades you've found determine which affinities you can apply.
- Grease or a weapon enchantment can be applied while using an affinity that allows weapon buffs.
- Its normal weapon hits build up blood loss. The effect only triggers against enemies that are vulnerable to it.
- Requires 14 Strength and 18 Dexterity, weighs 9 and has 55 innate Blood Loss buildup. Standard has no Arcane scaling; Blood or Occult affinity changes how Arcane contributes to eligible buildup.
- Overhead Stance holds the blade above your head. The light follow-up costs 8 FP for a downward strike, while the heavy follow-up costs 10 FP for a three-strike sequence. Holding the stance by itself does not pay both costs.
- Its moveset mixes broad slashes with thrusts on attacks such as the running light attack. Dodging during a charged-heavy startup performs a retreating feint rather than forcing you to finish the charge.
- It belongs to Great Katanas, so an ordinary katana in the other hand does not produce the usual paired Great Katana moveset.
- This version can change skills and affinities, unlike the fixed Dragon-Hunter's and Rakshasa variants. Reed Great Katana is another separately obtained weapon, rather than a new name for this corpse pickup.
- The nearby Ghostflame Dragon is not a required fight and does not drop the weapon. Loot the corpse and leave the lake if you only want the katana.
